Lucy
After TooBoy disappeared and we had tried all methods of locating him, we felt that we needed to get Rock a companion. Diane was firm that we should adopt a rescue animal, so she went online in search of one. On the Homeless Pets site, she found probably the saddest case I'd ever heard of. A Staffordshire Terrier had been found badly burned and left for dead. Well, we had to meet this dog. We found her to be playful and friendly and sweet natured, and we took her home for a trial period in the middle of November 2007. We spent months helping her recover from the necessary operations on her back and in the end we formally adopted her in 2008.
![]() First Day In Her New Home Her old name was Misty #2. Because she was black and tan, we were going to name her Louise (after the Louis Vuitton look). But her personality suggested a different name - Lucy (after Lucille Ball). |
![]() Scars When we got her, she had already had one operation, and it didn't hold everything together. You can see in the inset that her back was still an open wound. A hiker found her tied to a tree, and it appeared that someone had either poured acid on her, or poured lighter fluid on her and set her on fire. This was just after the Michael Vick discoveries. |
![]() Conehead We took her in to have her spayed, and Dr. Good took one look at her and immediately did a second operation on her back. It was three hours long, and he put in two layers of stitches plus staples to hold the skin in place. She had to wear this cone for about a month. |
![]() Second Time Around This is how her back looked after the second operation. It's all shaved with a big long scar up the middle. |
![]() Sitting Pretty Nowadays, the operation and the past life are all behind her. She may never get hair back in some places, but at least the skin has healed up and she's still sweet as ever. Her only vice is chewing on things. And it's always our favorite things - rugs, pillows, wallets, furniture. We've started a collection of Lucy's "art." |
![]() Mama's Little Angel No matter how many things she eats, Diane still loves her. And so do I. |
