Mother's Day Weekend, 2009

This year, we met at George L Smith State Park near Swainsboro, GA for our Mother's Day get together. Missing this year were Kiki and Hannah, but we were glad to have Don and Beth. They had just gotten back from a trip to Cancun where, they later found out, the outbreak of swine flu had begun. To spare us the possibility of infection, they were going to stay home. But we all said that if they had it, we were going to have it, too. It turns out that Don did indeed test positive, but you would have never known it. So much for the deadly swine flu, huh?

Festival
Pine Tree Festival

As luck would have it, we arrived on the last day of the Pine Tree Festival! So on Saturday we tried to take in all the sights.

Tree House
Tree House

In the downtown park the city had constructed this cute tree house on a pine tree. You could climb the ladder and stand on the front porch. Nearby was a barbecue contest and live music, but the main action was at the county recreation center about a mile away.

BMX1
BMX Grand Standing

We arrived at the rec center just in time for the BMX bike show. Like the song says, it was a "bright, sun shiney day."

BMX
High Jump

This was the highlight of the show, if you ask me. A volunteer over 6-feet tall stood on the deck of the ramp as a cyclist jumped over his outstretched hands. I was sure it was a close call, but as you can see in the picture, he cleared the hands by at least a foot!

Log Rolling
Log Rolling

I personally missed seeing this one, but Mom got some great shots of the attempts of people to master this skill.

Fish Face
Fish Face

What would a family gathering be without someone distorting their body in some way? Diane shows why she's a world class kisser.

Car Show
Car Show

It was a small show, but they had some interesting things to see. This is a Pinto station wagon and hanging from the driver's side window is a car hop tray with a burger, Coke and fries.

Jill and Mel
Made In The Shade

Jill and Melissa take a break from the sun and the heat in the open air shed.

Wares
BBQ Time!

We left the festival for the famous Ware's Barbecue just outside of town. It is housed in the old Sconyer's mill, and they kept the original sign on the inside of the restaurant. Their motto? "You can smell our butts all over town."

Richard and Jill
Decision Time!

Richard and Jill peruse the menu. Will it be chicken, pork, or beef? Everything tasted great.

Loose Tooth
I Predict A Visit From A Fairy

Jaiden shows the newest, loosest tooth in her mouth. So our little cutey pie will be snaggle-tooth very soon!

Canoe
The Toughest Home Gym Ever

Actually, Jaiden was just moving Leslie's canoe to a new place, but she did get a chance to get out on the lake with Melissa and Leslie. I hear that things were pretty peaceful while she was in the row boat with Mel. Then they got a little rockier when she jumped ship to the canoe with Les.

Manicure
Pampered

Diane promised to give Mom a manicure over the weekend and it seemed like the perfect time when we got back from the day's activities. Mom in her bathrobe. Dee with her four-sided gizmo. Smooooth!

Hugs
..I Love You Too

We all got a chance to give Mom our cards and presents, but this shot is the one I will remember. Happy Mother's Day!
